Long Term Care includes a wide range of medical, personal and social services. A person may need this care if he/she suffers from a prolonged illness, disability or cognitive impairment.

Long Term Care includes services provided by home health care agencies, adult day care centers, traditional nursing homes, and continuing care retirement communities.

In addition to providing the three levels of nursing care, Skilled Care, Intermediate Care, and Custodial Care, Long Term care must also provide at least one lower level of care such as home health care. Coverage provided for all lower levels of care must be a least 50% of the nursing home benefit.

Long Term Care Insurance policies vary in coverage. They will normally pay a fixed-dollar amount or the actual costs of care, up to a specified dollar amount, for a specified length of time and kind of care. This is referred to as the daily benefit amount. Benefits include some or all of the following:
  • Nursing Home
  • Respite
  • Alternative, waiting in hospital for nursing home
  • Adult Day Care
  • Bed Reservation
  • Assisted Living Facilities
  • Home Health Services
  • Hospice
  • Home and Community based Services
